What Do Pokemon Go Woes and Colorado Auto Accidents Share in Common?

 Posted by:    Sep 29, 2016

There are already enough reasons to check your phone, increasing the risk for Colorado car accidents: social media like Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter. Of course, Pokemon Go is the biggest thing. An augmented reality game, people go around looking to catch virtual reality creatures and it's taken the world by storm. It's also been taking up amounts of mobile data capacity not seen since streaming services like Hulu, Pandora and Netflix. That's a problem in Colorado, which is lagging behind some pretty small towns in data speed.

New Report Indicates Mobile Data Speeds are Mediocre in Denver
A recent article by the Denver Post indicates that Denver barely makes the top 50 in mobile data speeds. It would be one thing if the city was behind Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles and other major cities, which it is. Even Wichita makes some sense as it has received assistance from Google. Yet there may be a growing correlation between an increase in Denver car crashes and the fact that it lags behind towns like Boise, Omaha, and even Billings and Fargo.

The reason is simple: smartphones may have permanent access to mobile data but it would quickly eat into one's plan if the device was permanently checking for mail and on other apps. So both Android and iOS devices set up a minimum interval of 15 minutes before they update. Any time in between that and users putting themselves at risk for Colorado car accidents because they have to refresh their device for texts, social media updates or Pokemon Go info.

Unfortunately, outside of accidents, there are few disincentives for keeping one's eyes off the road. Drivers under the age of 18 face a $50 fine for first-time offenses of any cell phone usage and $100 thereafter. Adults face similar fines but only for texting.

The Stats Behind Denver Distracted Driving Accidents
As the incidences of drunk driving are decreasing, texting is up, a lot. Six times as many people are seen texting compared to a decade ago. More than 3,000 deaths come as a result of distracted driving of some sort.

No, in fact, nearly half of all adults have put themselves in danger of a serious auto accident injury, either by driving while using a cell phone. So while the perception of teens not thinking that texting is an issue (only 40 percent of them believe that, according to the NHTSA), those who are 45 are, demographically speaking, not much likely to be driving in the next 10 to 20 years.
