Apple Introduces New Do Not Disturb While Driving Feature

Anyone who has an iPhone is familiar with the Do Not Disturb (DND) feature, which blocks notifications from incoming texts, calls, and other updates while turned on. The feature is great when trying to get some shuteye, seeing a movie, spending time with family or friends, or just trying to give oneself a little distance from technology. DND can be easily turned on and off with a swipe and touch of the screen. Apple has recently added to its DND feature with the iOS 11 update. Now, not only do phones possess a Do Not Disturb feature, but a Do Not Disturb while driving feature!

How the Do Not Disturb While Driving Feature Works
As explained by Apple, the first time that your phone senses that you may be driving, it will show you a description of the DND while driving feature once you come to a stop. If you tap the "Turn on while driving" option, then your phone's DND feature will automatically come on next time you're behind the wheel. It knows to turn on when:

• Your phone automatically connects with your car's Bluetooth; or

• Your phone senses that you may be driving.

You can also turn the feature on and off by simply going to your phone's settings and changing the setting in "customized controls."

What to Expect When the Do Not Disturb While Driving Feature is Turned On
If you have your DND while driving feature turned on, your phone will automatically go into DND mode when you're driving. This means that:

• If you get an incoming call, text, or other notification, your phone will not light up, vibrate or make a sound;

• If you get a text, your phone will automatically send a text back, letting the person know you're driving; and

• If your phone is connected to Bluetooth, you can still receive calls through your Bluetooth and talk hands-free. Other standard features for DND for calls apply (such as the call going through even with DND on if the person calls twice).

Another cool feature is that you can still use maps and GPS while driving, and if you're a passenger and your phone thinks you're driving, all you have to do is tap "I'm not driving," to turn the DND while driving feature off. For parents, there are restrictions that can be used to keep the DND on, which could be ideal for parents of teen drivers.
