Any time that the brain is hit with an object, penetrated, shaken violently, subjected to rotational forces, or deprived of oxygen, a brain injury can occur. As such, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are some of the most common injury types that individuals sustain in a variety of accidents, including car accidents, sports accidents, pedestrian accidents, and many other types of accidents.

A TBI is one of the most serious injuries. If you are involved in an accident, being able to recognize the signs of a TBI and taking action immediately if you think that you may have a brain injury is critical. Here are a few signs that you may have a TBI after an accident. If you suffer from any of the following, don’t hesitate to seek medical care immediately.

Loss of Consciousness
If you lose consciousness as a result of an accident, there is a very strong likelihood that you have a traumatic brain injury. Typically, the longer the period of loss of consciousness, the more serious the TBI. Even if you only blackout for a few seconds, you should see a doctor as soon as possible.

Confusion, Dizziness, and Disorientation
If you are feeling confused, dizzy, or disoriented after being involved in an accident, it could be because your brain was injured. It’s normal to feel shocked and traumatized after an accident - this doesn’t mean that you have a TBI. But if you can’t remember certain details (like what you were doing before the accident), are having trouble following conversations or paying attention, or overall feel confused about your surroundings or what’s happening around you, you should meet with a medical professional.

Nausea and Vomiting
Suffering from nausea or/and vomiting after an accident in which your head was impacted is a strong indication that you may have a TBI. Don’t dismiss these symptoms as insignificant.

Emotional and Cognitive Problems
Again, it’s normal to feel shocked after an accident, especially if you were seriously injured, or if you saw someone suffer a serious or fatal injury in the accident. That being said, emotional problems, such as being unable to control one’s emotions, crying uncontrollably, acting out in anger or aggression, or suffering from mood swings can all be indicative of a TBI. If you’re not sure if your emotional challenges are stemming from a brain injury or not, meet with a doctor just to be sure.

You may also suffer cognitive problems if you have a TBI, such as difficulties with memory, learning, or concentration.
